Holiness is defined by the presence of boundaries, and things that are pure and sacred are those that are well-bounded and whole. Thus hybrid forms of life become inherently evil, impure. For example in pagan Romanian myths, the bat is a mouse that stole holy bread from the church, so God punished him by giving him demon wings. And the mouse originates from Devil’s spit.

Here monsters exist to highlight the grey spaces that lie between dualities of gender, good and evil, and nature-culture. These creatures transcend the multiple layers of meaning inherent in what we conventionally call “one”, illuminating the profound interconnectivity between all forms of life.
